Lindsley—4/19—[Ed. Note: This is the Lindsley Vault. A Memo from Bertha Lindsley Lewis, Wife of William A. Lewis, to Edward L. Vogt, President of the Board of Trustees, dated 7 Feb 1957, stated that her brother Robert Lindsley Mather was the last person buried in the vault before it was sealed. Also that the original deed for the vault was executed by the Board of Trustees to William M. Lindsley, Joseph B. Lindsley, Caleb F. Lindsley, and Mary Ann Lindsley, Widow of Robert F. Lindsley. Mary Ann & Robert were the grandparents of Bertha Lindsley Lewis. William M. Lindsley was Mary Ann’s second husband. In a letter to the Pastor of The Presbyterian Church In Morristown, dated 16 February 2001, James Elliott Lindsley stated “The vault was built by William Mead Lindsley, a Morristown merchant, in 1844. It may have been built to hold the remains of his brother Robert, who died about that time. William married Robert’s widow, but died in 1849 and his coffin was placed in the vault. His widow, Mary Ann Fairclo Lindsley died in 1890. Caleb Farrand Lindsley (death date unknown) and his wife, Maria C. Abigail & Matthew were parents of nine i.e., William Francis, Alfred Elmer, Mary Elizabeth, Pierson, Phebe, Anne, Harriet Mariah, Albert Barnes, and Charles Henry. The numbering sequence of Parker’s Survey and the proximity to William Francis Lindsley at Sites 28/16 & 28/17 and Matthew Lindsley at Site 28/19 suggests that the displaced whitestone marker at Site 28/18 could be that of Abigail and two of the Daughters of Matthew & Abigail i.e., Mary Elizabeth & Phebe].
Lindlsey, Albert—Reinterred at Evergreen 1 Sep 1879 Location B-20—[Ed. Note: Chambers shows Albert Lindsley Norris d. 20 Sep 1866, age 3. Later research, see particularly The Descendants Of Andrew Ford Of Weymouth, Massachusetts, compiled by Elizabeth Cobb Stewart, Capital City Press, Montpelier, Vermont (1968), which, at Pages 20-24, calls into question the previously held ancestry of John Ford. Based on property records and wills, John Ford is shown to be the Son of James Ford of Weymouth. Also in Ancestors & Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman with related families, Patty B. Myers relates numerous accounts of the drowning mentioned above and suggests that the drowning Father was one John Freeman, whose Widow Ann was left to raise their family. Following the death of John Ford, Elizabeth 2nd m. John Lindly. No children found in The Combined Registers for this marriage. See Lindsley, John].
Lindsley, Ephraim—31/40—d. 26 Mar 1824, age 71. [Ed. Note: CR87, 137, 139, 293 & 314 show Son of Junia Lindsly and his 2nd Wife Hannah Nutman, Baptized 2 Nov 1753, m. CR138 reports four children with dates of death of 30 Apr 1777, 11 Jun 1778, 10 Jul 1781, and 23 Jul 1785, but no names are shown. CR314 show eight of the eleven children of John & Sarah listed above were mentioned in John’s Will dated 7 Sep 1874. Two more of the eleven children are known to have died prior to the date of the Will i.e., in 1769 and earlier in 1784. The eleventh child Azariah b. 28 Mar 1781 was not mentioned in the Will, which suggests he was the child who died 10 Jul 1781. By process of elimination it appears John & Sarah were parents of at least three more children who died as infants or in early childhood for a total of fourteen children. John was elected Elder 20 Jun 1769. Following the death of her Husband, Sarah became the 3rd Wife of Benjamin Halsey].
Lindsley, John—NL Segment 29 or 30—d. 7 Oct 1816, age 59. [Ed. Note: CR94 & 138 show John Lindly, Son of John & Sarah (Rainer) Lindly b. 21 Jul 1758, m. Lindsley, Joseph—Reinterred at Evergreen 23 Nov 1866 Location F-35—[Ed. Note: The information provided by Chambers is insufficient to provide a connection with others with the same name included in The Combined Registers or either the Vail or Parker compilation. If Joseph Lindsley is, in fact, Joseph B. Lindlsey, listed below, a connection is established to five other children of Jesse & Margaret Lindsley, who died in infancy between 1851 and 1856 i.e., Mary E., Matthew, Orlando, Samuel P., and William B. However, the markers of Joseph B. Lindsley and his siblings still are identifiable in Segment 9].

Lindsley, Joseph, Major—29/4—d. 8 Oct 1822, age 87. [Ed. Note: CR136 & 139 show Son of Daniel & Grace (_______) Lindsley, b. 1735, 1st m. Anne _______, probably before 1763. Joseph & Anne were parents of six i.e., Bathiah, Grace, Susannah, Squire, Jemima, and Anna. Anne d. 8 Dec 1779, age 37. Joseph 2nd m. Mary Gardiner 1 Oct 1781. Joseph & Mary were parents of five i.e., Phebe, Joseph M., Ira, Matthew Gelston, and Mary. Joseph was elected an Elder 31 Jul 1777. CR314 makes reference to Major Joseph Lindsley, Son of Benjamin & Sarah (_______) Lindsley as the “Blind Major.” The nickname appears to have been applied in error. Later research (i.e., Bartenstein, Fred & Isabel, New Jersey’s Revolutionary War Powder Mill, Morris County Historical Society, Morristown, NJ, 1975, at Pages 158-161), show Major Joseph Lindsley, Son of Daniel & Grace (_______) Lindsley, was the “Blind Major,” who helped build and operate Ford’s Powder Mill. The error of identifying Benjamin’s Son Joseph as the “Blind Major” is easily understood, as Benjamin Lindsley lived for many years on property adjacent to the Powder Mill].

CR139 & 140 show Phebe, Daughter of Matthew Gelston & Abigail (Beers) Lindsley, Baptized 6 Jun 1824 and Phebe Ann d. 13 Feb 1826, age 2. See Lindsley, Abigail].
