The Director of Music/Organist works with the ordained and other church staff and the Worship & Music Committee to plan, develop, and implement the music ministry of the church. Music plays a central role in the life of The Presbyterian Church in Morristown, its mission, and outreach to the community. We seek to continue our rich heritage of the centrality of music in the life of the church.

Job responsibilities include:

•  Plan, develop and implement the comprehensive music ministry of the church.
•  Lead and direct all adult and high school choirs: currently three adult choirs and adult and youth bell choirs.
•  Act as church organist for 3 weekly worship services, weddings, funerals, and special events throughout the year.
•  Plan and implement the annual Ringers-on-th- Green youth bell choir 7- to 10-day tour and seasonal outreach events.
•  Supervise the maintenance of the church’s musical instruments (listed below).
•  Plan and implement music outreach programs.
•  Supervise and collaborate with the Children’s Music Director.

The musical resources of the church include the sanctuary organ, which is a 78 rank, three-manual instrument built by the Austin Organ Company; a smaller Austin unit organ located in the Chapel; a Klop Continuo Organ; three grand pianos; two upright pianos: a six-octave handbell set; and a five-octave chime set.

Education: Master’s Degree Minimum
Experience: 3-5 years preferred
Salary: Consistent with experience

Specific skills/specialized knowledge: Organ/piano, choral conducting, voice, administration, team player, mature faith and understanding of Reformed theology.

•  Required skills and knowledge include ability to complete short- and long-range planning for multiple groups, background and training in various types of music, working technical knowledge of piano and organ, experience with choral direction and development, and aptitude for handbell choir direction and development.
•  The ideal candidate will demonstrate his/her ability to work well with diverse groups in the church, including staff, trained and untrained volunteer musicians, as well as those not currently participating in a music program.
•  S/he will be able to document previous successes in implementing new music programs and musical groups as well as growth of membership of existing groups.
•  S/he will also possess those personality traits that are important when working with people in general as well as in a church setting: patience, a sense of humor, strong interpersonal skills, and a welcoming attitude toward music program participants and non-participants.
•  The ideal candidate will be able to describe his/her spiritual journey and call to be a music ministry leader.
