Report from the PCM Mission Team to the Dominican Republic

By Pastor Cindy

The PCM Mission team to the Dominican Republic had a blessed experience building a new church/school from what was originally just a tiny tin shack in a barrio called Zumbon outside of the capitol city of Santo Domingo. Besides the construction project, we held a free medical clinic that served over 800 patients from the community, and provided Bible School activities during 2 afternoons for over 200 children. The mission team, (led by Dr. Ken Culver, Joel Strom, Bridget Larson, and Pastor Cindy), consisted of a mixture of 17 PCM members with 23 others from neighboring churches.

The teens on the trip were especially inspiring as they shared during our nighttime devotions about how God was revealed to them in new ways by living alongside those in poverty, by working hand in hand, and by the friendships formed with the Dominican Christians in Zumbon.  Our trip members ranged in age from 79 – 15 years of age. It was a joy to work together and see how the various members found ways to use their abilities, gifts, and talents to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ in Zumbon.

PCM Receives Plaque Commemorating the Mission Work in the DR

On Sunday, August 5th, Reverend Moises Martinez, the president of the Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal M.I. churches in the Dominican Republic surprised our church with a “thank you” visit. During the morning worship service he and his wife presented our church with a lovely plaque commemorating the work our church has done in the past 2 years working with both the San Pedro and the Zumbon churches in the Dominican Republic. It was a lovely presentation and beautiful plaque. We are greatly humbled by this amazing gift from the Iglesia De Dios churches because we know how they struggle for funds. I am reminded of the story in Mark where Jesus observed the widow giving generously out of her poverty.

Mark 12:41-44
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--- all she had to live on."
