Comfort in Times of Sorrow
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not
want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me
beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right
paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the
darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and
your staff-- they comfort me. You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup
overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days
of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole
life long.
Vindicate me, O God, and defend my
cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and
unjust deliver me! For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why
have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of
the oppression of the enemy? O send out your light and your
truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and
to your dwelling. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God
my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my
God. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted
within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and
my God.
You who live in the shelter of the
Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to
the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the
deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under
his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and
buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow
that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or
the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your
side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near
you. You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of
the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most
High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come
near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to
guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. You will tread
on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will
trample under foot. Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect
those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.
With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.
O LORD, you have searched me and known
me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my
thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my
tongue, O LORD, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and
before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful
for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. Where can I go from
your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend
to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits
of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand
shall hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light around me become night," even the darkness is not
dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is
as light to you. For it was you who formed my inward parts; you
knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I
am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that
I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being
made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your
eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all
the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum
of them! I try to count them--they are more than the sand; I come
to the end--I am still with you. O that you would kill the wicked,
O God, and that the bloodthirsty would depart from me--those who
speak of you maliciously, and lift themselves up against you for
evil! Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not
loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test
me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and
lead me in the way everlasting.
Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation,
who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to
console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with
which we ourselves are consoled by God. For just as the sufferings
of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant
through Christ.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our
weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very
Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches
the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit
intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know
that all things work together for good for those who love God, who
are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew
he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in
order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And
those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called
he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who
is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave
him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything
else? Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who
justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes,
who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes
for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship,
or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril,
or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all
day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all
these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor
height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able
to separate us from the love of God in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
God is our refuge and strength, a
very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though
the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart
of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains
tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad
the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in
the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when
the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with
us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works
of the LORD; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. He
makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and
shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. "Be still, and
know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted
in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is
our refuge.
I lift up my eyes to the hills-- from
where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven
and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you
will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The
LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD
will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and
forevermore.
Keep your lives free from the love
of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I
will never leave you or forsake you."
So we can say with confidence, "The
Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"
We are afflicted in every way, but
not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but
not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in
the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also
be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always
being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus
may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in
us, but life in you. But just as we have the same spirit of faith
that is in accordance with scripture--" I believed, and so I spoke"--we
also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who
raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring
us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake,
so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase
thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart.
Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is
being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is
preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,
because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen;
for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
Peace in Times of Anxiety
Answer me when I call, O God of my
right! You gave me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me,
and hear my prayer. How long, you people, shall my honor suffer
shame? How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies? But
know that the LORD has set apart the faithful for himself; the LORD
hears when I call to him. When you are disturbed, do not sin; ponder
it on your beds, and be silent. Offer right sacrifices, and put
your trust in the LORD. There are many who say, "O that we might
see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O LORD!"
You have put gladness in my heart more than when their grain and
wine abound. I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone,
O LORD, make me lie down in safety.
Do not worry about anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses
all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.
