Launched in 1984, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, this mission originally opened six days a week and served just eight clients. It soon became an interfaith project that found support from other congregations in the greater Morristown area. The Soup Kitchen's doors have always remained open and have never turned anyone away. Now housed at the Church of the Redeemer on South Street in Morristown, CSK currently serves as many as 300 guests daily, 365 days a year.
With the help of volunteers from 34 local churches, temples, elementary, middle and high schools, businesss, corporations and individuals in the community, the CSK mission is to provide nutritious meals in a safe, warm, caring environment, free of charge, to anyone who comes seeking nourishment. Access to community services and resources is offered as well.
Volunteers make and serve casseroles, desserts for daily meals and clean up at the end of the day. They educate the community about hunger and homelessness, most demonstrably through their participation in the annual Hunger Walk in October. The also conduct drives to collect juice, canned goods and paper products, as well as sleeping bags, blankets, coats and toiletries.
A large portion of the goods collected for the Soup Kitchen is stored in our church Parish House basement. Congregations take turns with meal preparation and serving duties. The Presbyterian Church in Morristown has 12 volunteers who regularly help on the fourth Thursday of the every month. Anyone interested is welcome to join us. Please contact Julie.
