Helping Joplin Rebuild

On May 22, 2011, Joplin, Missouri and the surrounding area was attacked by the deadliest tornado to hit the U.S. since 1936. The devastating twister lasted all of six minutes and cut a swath 3/4 of a mile wide and 13.8 miles long, killing at least 153 people. Many more were injured and the death toll may continue to rise. Weeks later, much of the scene around Joplin looks as if the storm just occurred as families, businesses and authorities, local and national, try to face the monumental task of rebuilding a community, and helping individuals rebuild their lives and hopes.

In June 2011, PCM sent a team to help with debris clean-up in conjunction with AmeriCorps, Presbyterian Disaster Relief and Southern Missouri University. Click here for a summary and photos of the team's experience and what else is being done to help the people of Joplin.

Please pray for each one of us to do our part to bring hope and the love of Christ to those who have lost so much.
